The Original Pilates Method

The original Pilates method of Joseph H. Pilates is a movement system of over 500 controlled exercises. These are performed on the mat and on specialised equipment that utilise springs as resistance. Pilates training engages the mind and provides a balanced blend of strength and flexibility training. Conscious breathing is integrated to stimulate the blood-circulation.

The approach is holistic; no single muscle group is overworked, rather several muscle groups work simultaneously through smooth, precise and continuous motion. As the body begins to balance its muscles uniformly, efficient movement patterns allow the body and particularly the spine to move with ease. All exercises initiate from the body’s core – the deep abdominal muscles, deep postural muscles and pelvic girdle region– which is first strengthened and stabilised before working into the body’s periphery.
